Why Do People Steal Content?

Today in network marketing individuals are being taught, it is ok to steal – plagiarize other peoples content.

They do this even though they have no relationship to the individual, past or present.

Why would anyone in network marketing need to resort to this?

Do they not realize they are sabotaging their business…

…and just how easy it is to get the plagiarized content removed from their site or have the site completely shutdown?

The sad fact is the more prominent you site becomes, it only increases the chances that your content will be plagiarized.

Myself, along with many others in the network marketing industry have been plagued with this problem for years. I’ve had my pages posted on ezine websites as original work.

Some individuals have gone so far as to use my titles and descriptions to describe their video’s.

You have to ask yourself, will this course of action build credibility with your target market, or does it even matter to people today.

Writing content for your website or blog is not that difficult, although it does require some knowledge of the subject. A little research, a little self-education, then writing in your own words will make your content unique!

When you write unique content, you’ll become attractive!

What about using other people’s names?

There are those who feel it is perfectly ok to use your name in their content and advertising! Usually they indicate they are going to tell you all of the other person’s secrets…

…is this some form of super secret attraction marketing formula?

Here is just one of the many offenders in this area, of using other people’s names in the hope of generating leads.

What does this method of marketing really prove? It proves their system doesn’t work! Especially if they have to resort to utilizing other successful marketers names, doesn’t it just prove that they are unattractive?

Here is a disclaimer for the site, now read this out loud.

PEOPLE WHO USE OUR SERVICES, PRODUCTS, AND WEB SITE ARE ADVISED TO DO THEIR OWN INVESTIGATION WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING DECISIONS AND ALL MATERIAL, INFORMATION, SERVICES, AND PRODUCTS THAT WE HAVE PROVIDED SHOULD BE VERIFIED INDEPENDENTLY BY YOUR OWN HIGHLY QUALIFED PROFESSIONALS. OUR MATERIAL, SERVICES, AND PRODUCTS ON THIS WEB SITE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED CAREFULLY AND EVALUATED BEFORE MAKING A DECISION, ON WHETHER TO RELY UPON THEM.

…they pretty much tell you that their entire offer is BS!

Especially when they say BY YOUR OWN QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS!

Isn’t that what they are claiming they will be for you? In other words, “You better check us out to make sure we’re not lying – and you better get someone who actually is a professional to do so.” Never mind that you can’t call them – because they don’t list their number – they even hide their identitiy in their domain registration!

Now I’m sure that shortly after I publish this post, the page will probably disappear. In this page he promises to teach you all of my secrets…

So what can you do when you find that your work is being hijacked?

Essentially you have two options:

  • Do Nothing.
  • Or Take Action.

At first you may become angry, when you find out just how prevalent this is within the network marketing industry. You maybe become so discouraged, you’ll decide to do nothing at all.

What if you want to take action? This requires work on your part, you can track down the web host and file a report of the violation of the DMCA.

Using the DMCA is very effective, especially when it comes to blogger a Google service. Google takes this mater seriously read more here. I’ve used this, the material or the website is usually gone within 24 hours.

What about the Fair Use Act?

The fair use act does allow limited use of the copyrighted material without permission. Still you must know what you can and cannot do with the material. Here is a resource to educate you.

It is sad that we have to resort to these measures to protect our intellectual property, yet many within network marketing do feel anything is fair game.

How do you feel about your content or name?

    Hi Glenn,

I am so sorry this has happened to you. I am taking some online college classes and this weeks material is on plagerism. In my opinion its stealing whether you know who you are taking it from or not. I just want you to know I am going to reference this article in a response to my professor, and give you all the credit. Thank you so much hang in there.

    Hi Glenn,

It’s comforting to here we’re not the only network marketing website being plagiarised. We’ve had numerous difficulties over the past 12 months, even to the extent that someone tried to plagiarise our whole website and sell it in an ebook. Fortunately we caught him before he could sell too many copies.

For anyone looking to protect their content we’ve found Copyscape to be a very useful tool. Although at first it was frustrating to receive our weekly updates on how many people have plagiarised our content, more recently we’ve taught ourselves to see it more as a positive in that people like our content so much that they want to steal it.

We feel for anyone who is having their content stolen as we are constantly having to deal with this issue too. But don’t give up.

Keep fighting the good fight, the right fight.

    Happy Networking

    Gary

    Hi Kim,

Unfortunately I’m not the only one that this happens to. I guess this is just society as a whole today. Where it really gets interesting is when you subscribe to Google News for updates on a particular topic.

Quite often you’ll find a few of the web alerts come from their own hosting at blogger and the sites they are listing have scraped the content from other sites.

I do hope your professor gives you a nice grade and realizes that you’ve really dug around to come up with supporting material.
